River Cabins : Wilderness Fishing New Zealand

Tauhara Sunrise is also able to offer guests access to two fabulous river cabins that offer a chance to get away from it all, enjoy a day or two of fishing and, in the case of the Whanganui River Lodge, have the option of horse trekking or hiking through some magnificent areas of native bush.

NOTE: Neither of our cabin options are located on the Tauhara Sunrise property. Kereru is 40 minutes south of Taupo, just a few minutes off State Highway 1 near Turangi. The Whanganui River cabin is 1 hour by car to the front gate of the 3000 acre property, then another hour traveling in a jeep across mountain tracks to get to the cabin.

Kereru Lodge

Self-contained chalet-style accommodation in a wilderness environment, just a minute's walk from the Parade Pool on the world famous Tauranga Taupo river, near the southern end of Lake Taupo. Nothing else in the Taupo area compares when it comes to an isolated setting that is easy to access by vehicle (access for lodge guests only), and that offers delightful fly fishing to all, regardless of skill or fitness level. Other fishermen must walk for an hour to get to this part of the river, so they are few and far between. Two chalets, each with a double bed and bunks for two (bed and bunks in same room), plus a two-bedroom house.

Whanganui River Lodge

Located on the banks of the pristine Whanganui River, this lodge offers a true wilderness fishing experience, without the need for expensive helicopter fees (though helicopter is an option). The entrance to the property is about an hour from Taupo. From there, your guides will take you in via jeep or quad bike (about an hour) or horseback (about 2 hours) across rugged yet spectacular terrain. The freestanding veranda and outdoor cooking & dining area allow for outdoor living, even if the weather turns rough. In addition to sight fishing for rainbow and brown trout, bushwalks or horse treks through majestic native forests are available. Main cabin has a bedroom and a sleeping loft.
