WHANGANUI RIVER LODGE NEW ZEALAND
Wilderness. The very word conjures up images of
breathtaking views, dense indigenous forests, gin-clear
mountain streams, and tranquillity - a haven to unwind
and rejuvenate the soul. Whanganui River Lodge offers
the opportunity to get into the wilderness
inexpensively, because you don't need a helicopter to
access the river and cabin (though you do require an
adventurous spirit if you don't choose a helicopter,
because it's a one-hour drive across 3000 acres of
mountainous terrain to get there).
The vistas on the way into the lodge are spectacular
- wide, sweeping views of the volcanoes, as well as
native bush as far as the eye can see. And there's
another plus with this experience: your guides -
brothers Danny, Rocky and Kelvin - are Maori (New
Zealand's indigenous people) and can share with you
their rich heritage and culture.
Once at the lodge, fishermen will want to waste no
time getting into the action, while non-fishing partners
may want to relax on the verandah overlooking the river
with a good book, or enjoy a bush walk or horse trek,
with Danny as your guide.
The lodge features the following amenities:
- Cabin, with bedroom (can sleep 4), loft (sleeps
2), kitchen and dining area with pot belly stove,
shower
- "Outhouse" with flush toilet
- Verandah, with great views of the river just below
- Unique outdoor dining area crafted from native
timbers
- Separate guides' accommodation
